The aide said that guys like me were ''in what we call the reality-based community,'' which he defined as people who ''believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.'' I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. ''That's not the way the world really works anymore,'' he continued. ''We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.''--from Without a Doubt By RON SUSKIND, October 17, 2004 in the NEW YORK TIMES.

Let's consider for a moment where we are vis a vis reality and Iraq.

We are about to install an Islamic Republic. I don't remember this being mentioned as our goal until the last couple of weeks.

I remember the threat of Saddam's WMD.

Here's a link to a database originally put together by Henry Waxman (and staff.)http://hgrm.ctsg.com/index.asp. You can pick a speaker, a subject or a key word and find out who said what about what and when. You know, the precise day when Condi Rice said Saddam had nuclear weapons that he planned to use on the US. Or Dick Cheney. Or Donald R. Rumsfeld, etc. It's very clear. It makes denials into exactly what they are in reality; LIES. They lied when they said it was true. They lied again when they said they'd never said it was true. Lies on top of lies. All in reality.

Now, this might have something to do with Bill Clinton's penis or the very fact that I'm pointing this out but I don't think so.

Other reasons for invading and occupying Iraq were put forward. Some were rather vague, Freedom for instance. Some were less so, Democracy for instance.

These don't seem to be in the cards either in any way most Americans understand.

There are certain Americans who desire to be ruled by clerics. Most do not. There are certain Americans who wish to deny women equal rights. Again, most do not. There are certain Americans who wish establish an official state religion. And once again, most do not. There are even certain Americans who think (in their own reality) that the US has a state religion. Patrick Henry is their man. But fortunately for the rest of us there was also Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, Adams, et al. All of these profoundly unamerican things are rapidly on their way in the constitution Iraq is about to ratify.

Where does that leave us vis a vis Iraq and reality?

With nearly 2,000 dead combatants (at least. The ones who die on helicopters and in hospitals, etc. aren't counted.) Who knows how many maimed. Hundreds of thousands of dead innocents. Billions of dollars down the drain (some lost track of). All for....

...An Islamic Republic in the Middle East. Another one. Just like Iran next door.

I tell you, that Clenis has some splainin' to do.
