It just keeps getting better and better:
"As one Republican said to me last night, if this was a Democratic White House we'd have congressional hearings in a second."--Tim Russert on today's THE TODAY SHOW.
Tim Russert maybe the closest thing to Walter Cronkite we have today. That's a very sad sentence. And I didn't really think much of ol' Walt. So think of how I feel, you selfish bastards. But...there it is. Is this like the moment when Walter turned against the Viet Nam war? The pundit-class often remarks that when Cronkite turned against the war a critical mass of opposition had been reached. Now Walter was from that great era of 'real' broadcast journalists. The Murrow generation. Guys that had reported on WWII for CBS radio. People with, for the most part, print journalism experience. You know? Real journalists. You know? Not Bill O'Reilly journalists. Who is John Gibson? Where did that freak come from? I know where Bob Shiefer comes from. He was working for a Fort Worth newspaper on 11/22/63. When O'Reilly tells about his background it turns out to be a lie. But, the typical FAUX NEWS viewer still believes it anyway which is a whole 'nother story. But......
There it is...I've heard it from numerous sources. Tim Russert said it on day-time (read:moronic) TV:"As one Republican said to me last night, if this was a Democratic White House we'd have congressional hearings in a second." Ah hell...let's have some congressional hearings anyway. The president's a lame-duck. He (and his gang) ain't gonna help anyone get elected or re-elected in 'o6 or '08. And the folks back home who's grand-parents you're trying to screw out of their retirement and sons, daughters, husbands and wives you're treating as cannon fodder just might enjoy some substantial news on the news broadcasts instead of the 'missing white woman' du jour or celebrity pedophile-o-rama...
So Tim...enjoy tonight's cocktail party in DC...you're no Walter, but as Freddy Sykes says at the end of THE WILD BUNCH: "It ain't as good as it used to be but it'll do." And keep those sound-bites coming...
